Open Call for Submissions
We invite young artists, writers, and playwrights to submit original works that reflect on racial issues in America today, in conversation with the art and legacy of The Crisis magazine. Selected works will be featured in the gallery exhibition, live performances, and a commemorative publication. We’re seeking fresh perspectives from a new generation of creators. Voices that challenge, reimagine, and push the dialogue forward.
November 10, 2025 marks the 115th anniversary of the NAACP’s journal The Crisis founded by W.E.B. DuBois
2026 In Crisis is a powerful, multi-day performance event that explores the ongoing struggles, triumphs, and voices of the present day through the lens of historical African American literature and visual art. Inspired by work found in the early years of The Crisis magazine, including Georgia Douglas Johnson's groundbreaking anti-lynching play Safe, as well as illustrations created by John Henry Adams Jr., the event will feature a full performance of the play Safe every night, in addition to a series of student and community-led performances throughout the week. New original artwork will also be on display. Hosted by The Department of Theatre and Communication Studies at Clark Atlanta University during Black History Month, 2026 In Crisis bridges generations by reimagining historical themes through the perspectives of today's young artists, storytellers, and performers.
